About Dr. Jon Kabat Zinn Ph.D.

Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn is responsible for the program of stress reduction at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.

Jon’s meditative approach to stress management, depression and anxiety problems is of particular use to sufferer’s of chronic pain, in part due to his seamless integration of Hatha Yoga practices into his popular approach.

Founding Director of the Stress Reduction Clinic in Boston currently under the direction of long-time friend and colleague, Dr. Saki Santorelli, Jon also founded the Centre for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society at the Massachusetts Medical School and is the Professor of Medicine emeritus.

Considered one of the best teachers of mindfulness meditation today, among his publications are; “Coming to our senses” and “wherever you go, there you are.”

He is praised many practitioners of Mind/Body medicine in the western world such as Medical giants; Dr. Dean Ornish, Dr. Candace Pert, Dr. Richard Earle, Dr. Andrew Weil, Dr. Bernie Siegel and Dr. Norman Cousins and is considered to be a major contributor to modern health care by Psychologists, Biological Scientists and Medical Doctors around the world including Cellular Biologist, Dr. Alastair Cunningham at the Ontario Cancer Institute.

Dr. Kabat-Zinn’s belief that anger and tension play an enormous role in the onset of heart disease, chronic pain, anxiety and depression lead him to develop his Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program (MBSR) which has been embraced by many medical facilities and hospitals.

Today, MBSR is considered a natural part of the North American landscape, no longer treated with skepticism, it’s benefits are well documented and enjoyed by fortunate recipients of its training from all walks of life.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction is currently taught world-wide in a variety of locations including pain clinics and medical centers and has been enthusiastically adopted by insightful practitioners of pain control and alleviation from a host of disciplines.

Jon is a writer, a scientist and a meditation teacher who has made appearances on Oprah and the PBS series “Healing and the Mind” with Bill Moyers. He lives in Massachusetts with his wife, Myla Kabat-Zinn, with whom he co-wrote a book on mindful parenting; Everyday Blessings.

A student of internationally recognized meditation guru, Tich Nhat Hanh of Plum Village located in France, Dr. Kabat-Zinn’s western approach to the eastern practice of mindfulness meditation has helped countless people prevent heart attacks and cope with the pain of living.

An eloquent speaker, Jon continues to teach his mindfulness methods to healthcare professionals and lay audiences worldwide, making his impact felt most amongst the millions of people in our population that have been assisted in coming to terms with illness and injury.

It is estimated that around 20, 000 have completed the 8 week MBSR program at Jon’s clinic in Boston and the passion of his devoted staff in the articulation of the practice of Mindfulness ensures the clinic’s ongoing success.
